The Principles of Gentle Yoga

1.  WHENEVER THE SENSATION INCREASES, DEEPEN THE BREATH.

“Yoga is about changing our habits.” Rodney Yee

It is our habit to shorten the breath when sensation increases. This is a copiong mechanism. A wonderful defense of the human organism to ward off the shock of traumas large and small.

In yoga practice the possibility is to feel more. Yoga helps us increase sensitivity and awareness. Ultimately this helps us make more skillful, conscious choices and allows us to create greater fulfillment in life.

And it all starts with the breath. Inhalations help us feel. Exhalations help us relax. There are a number of powerful yogic breathing techniques. The basic ones are useful in everyday life as well.

The initial yogic breathing technique is Dirgha pranayama (pronounced Deer-guh). This is also called the Complete Breath or Three-part Breath. It is fully inflating the lungs in the three regions of the abdomen, thorax and cavicle or belly, ribs and upper chest. The full inhalation is followed by fully relaxing, allowing the breath to spill out. A simple approach is to experiment with lengthening the inhalation and exhalation. Let it be an exploration. Notice how it feels. Avoid creating tension. Notice the effect. Practice regularly. Remember inhalations help us feel. Exhalations help us relax.

Gentle Joy Program - Changes Lives?

After our 4-day holiday program which ended New Year’s Eve ‘07, I headed home satisfied, and inspired, ready to let go of ‘07 and welcome in ‘08. A week or two later I received this kind message from a returning student, Dee, that surpassed my expectations! I share it with you to encourage you to consider coming to one of these Gentle Yoga weekends for rejuvenation, inspiration and insight.

“I want to let you know how much taking your Gentle Yoga week-end in December meant to me.

As soon as I completed the week-end in the Spring I knew I would come back. And my expectations were surpassed.

You have such skills as a teacher, and also create such a loving, compassionate, and fun environment. Thanks so much. You’ve helped to change the direction of my life. You will definitely see me again at Kripalu.”

Arrivederci, Tuscany

Tuscany. Ahhh, Tuscany. What a magical week, September 29 - October 6. The weather was spectacular. We ate alfresco every meal except the very first evening. The food at Ebbio is delicious, fresh, organic, full of the flavors of the region (soon I’ll post baked Radicchio with gorgonzola!).

The week went so smoothly. Amazingly enough there were no travel gliches, no lost luggage, no mishaps.

My favorite parts:

  • personal practice in the meditation room, candles lit, angelic music, each member arriving gradually to join in our morning yoga experience.
  • discovering a new town, unplanned for. On Thursday, our next-to-last day, we followed a suggestion to explore the quiet village of Castellina-in-Chianti. The pace was slow, the shops were dear, lunch in the piazza was the penultimet Tuscan experience, especially the simple yet profound, spinach with garlic and olive oil. That’s all it had in it. But it’s the olive oil. It has delicate flavors like a fine wine.
  • Our day in Florence at the end of the trip. My wife, Joyce, and I enjoyed an open-air bus tour getting our bearings in this resplendent cradle of the renaissance, then explored on foot, from market to monument to sculpture to cappuccinno bar to the shops on Ponte Vechio, some sweet gellatto and then joining some of our group for an amazing dinner in one of Florence’s piazza’s which boast numerous al fresco restaurants, street vendors and musicians. A festive carnival atmosphere. And at the very end of the evening the rains finally came. We were safe with our last gellattos two doors down from our little hotel.
  • reading passages from Eat, pray, love, by Elizabeth Gilbert, in which she extols the Italians for modelling how to enjoy life, how to smell the roses. And that’s what I bring home. Joy of living this good life. Life is good.

Until next year, Arrivederci Tuscany. (Planned for October 11 - 18, 2008!)

Heading to Tuscany

Our first Tuscan Yoga Holiday is about to launch. Our group is registered, flights have been booked, itinerarys are planned. My wife Joyce and I are enjoying our own travel preparations and feeling the excitement of realizing that it’s less than two weeks til we meet up with our group at the Florence airport. We have supplied packing lists and hope everyone is feeling relaxed about getting it all together, but realize that getting ready to be away can be hectic and stressful. We will be there to help destress after travel and look forward to sharing many moments of R&R in the exquisite yoga space at Ebbio and throughout our week in Tuscany. Many folks have arranged to stay extra days in Florence or add on side trips to Naples, Sicily, and even a week at a Tuscan cooking school. It’s an extraordinary experience to join with a group of inspired yogis and yoginis for a week in a beautiful foreign land, enjoying the pleasures of life and deepening spiritual practice. What a great way to travel. Ciao! Rudy

For those of you unable to travel that far, I’ll be hosting a four-night program, The Joy of Gentle Yoga on December 27 – 31st at Kripalu in Lenox, Massachusetts.

I’m must admit I, too, am getting used to this new blogging technique. In one of my first posts I described a kind of small internal journey I took about remembering and rediscovering work I had done with men and yoga. It was amazing for me to realize that even though I still hear from men who valued our work, it’s now been 10 years since our last workshop. Those memories coupled with the realization of how much I missed participating, have prompted me to renew our Men’s Yoga Adventures. Our first program takes place at Kripalu on Feb 3 2008. Our sessions always managed to leave us with a new sense of connection, and sparked insight, and a sense of healing. Invariably they added energy and meaning to our regular personal practice.

I’m obviously proud of Gentle Yoga. And it’s apparent to me that more and more people are interested in finding a style of yoga that is more easily accessible. Many of us deal with the realities of our bodies. Not all of us can be professional models and successful athletes. Most of us have to deal with real-life limitations: a lack of flexibility, back pain, some added pounds, and occasional soreness. Over the years, as I’ve dedicated my efforts to teaching gentle and beginner classes. Along the way I’ve discovered some exciting ways to make yoga practice easy and pleasurable for the less-than-limber. That’s what gentle yoga is!
